Do I need to leave my computer on all the time for my
house to be automated?
No. Both the older CP290 and the newer ActiveHome computer interfaces have a memory
that stores weekly scheduled events. Your computer is merely used in order to define
and scheduled the events. Once you have programmed your schedule, you may disconnect
the interface from your computer or turn your computer off.
I have too many peripherals that use my Mac's serial port.
Are there products available that make it easier to use my ActiveHome/CP290?
We suggest using a manual serial port swithcher. Such switches are available as
2-way or 4-way units . For a more expensive but more convenient product, you may
want to consider an automatic serial switch. Such switches are available at our online store.
How do I build a cable to connect my Macintosh to the ActiveHome
interface?
There are two ways to make a cable so that you can use the ActiveHome interface with your
Macintosh. If you already have the cable that connects ActiveHome to a PC, you may wish to
use it. This will require building a DB9 to MiniDIN-8 cable. Your other alternative is to
build a cable that connects directly between the ActiveHome and your Macintosh. This will
require building a RJ11 to MiniDIN-8 cable. Detailed diagrams
are available.
